Him Raksmey, Executive Director of CCRS, shared comments with Cambodianess on the importance of Cambodia’s decision to ratify UNCLOS.

Him Raksmey, executive director of the Cambodian Center for Regional Studies, said the ratification signals Cambodia’s strong commitment to international law and a rules-based international order.

“This provides space for small states like Cambodia to thrive in their national development,” Raksmey said. “It also offers a strong international legal framework for small coastal states to defend and advance their maritime interests.”

He added that through the ratification of UNCLOS, which is widely regarded as the constitution of the oceans, Cambodia can enhance its maritime sovereignty, strengthen its rights over maritime resource use and navigation, promote the peaceful settlement of maritime disputes, and deepen regional and international cooperation in the maritime domain.

“It is important that Cambodia continues to strengthen its capacities, including state institutions and human resources, and promote a vibrant ecosystem in the field of international law, in order to reap greater benefits from international instruments such as UNCLOS,” he said.
