Him Raksmey, Executive Director, CCRS shared his thoughts on the 2026 Thai General Election and the Cambodia-Thailand situation today on Kiripost.
“Him Raksmey, Executive Director of the Cambodian Centre for Regional Studies (CCRS), told Kiripost that the Thai election result will have an impact on Cambodia, saying that the outcomes of the election reflect the internal dynamics in Thailand. He stated that Thailand’s policies on the Cambodia-Thailand border disputes are a part of these internal dynamics.
“Other important dynamics include political and electoral processes, roles of key Thai state institutions such as Thai military, competing political movements and interests, and socioeconomic trends in Thailand,” Raksmey said.
He pointed out that the preliminary outcomes suggest the Bhumjaithai Party will get the most parliamentary seats, and will play a leading role in forming the new Thai government, which is expected to officially assume office by May 2026, if not sooner.
“I think Cambodia will pursue diplomacy to work with the new Thai government in bilateral, regional and international contexts to support and strengthen efforts towards peace, reconciliation and normalisation between Cambodia and Thailand,” Raksmey added.
“While any disputes should be settled through diplomacy and peaceful means, peace between Cambodia and Thailand is in the best interest of the two countries to foster their respective national development. As neighbours, Cambodia and Thailand should be permanent friends and partners.”
