Public Lecture “A World on Fire: Headed for WW3?” on 09 August 2024

The Cambodian Center for Regional Studies (CCRS), in partnership with Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia’s Faculty of Social Sciences and International Relations will organize a Public Lecture on “A World on Fire: Headed for WW3?” by Prof. Sorpong Peou, Visiting Distinguished Senior Fellow, CCRS on Friday, 09 August 2024, from 9:00am -11:00am, at Sen Monorom Hall, Third Floor, Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia (Toul Kork Campus).

“A World on Fire: Headed for WW3?”. The world in which we live today is on fire as a new Cold War is raging. But the question is whether it is headed for a hot global war. The overall global trend is quite worrisome, but Asia is unlikely to be the birthplace of WW3. So where is it going to be and why?

About the Role Players:
Prof. Sorpong Peou is a Full Professor in the Department of Politics and Public Administration at Toronto Metropolitan University and a member of the Yeates School of Graduate Studies. In addition to a PhD in International Relations and Comparative Politics from York University (Canada), he holds a Master of Arts (MA) in Political Science from York University and a Bachelor of Arts – Honours (BA – Hon) in Political Science and Peace and Conflict Studies from the University of Waterloo (Canada).

Dr. Peou is also a Member of the Eminent Persons Group at the Asian Political and International Studies Association (APISA); a College Fellow at McLaughlin College, York University, Toronto; a non-resident Senior Fellow, Hong Kong Research Center for Asian Studies (RCAS), Hong Kong; Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Cambodian Institute for Peace and Cooperation and Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Cambodian Development Research Institute, Phnom Penh (Cambodia) Other current affiliations include Director at Large, Canadian Association for Refugee and Forced Migration Studies (CARFMS) and Member; Advisory Board, the Center for Applied Research in Conflict Transformation (CARiCT), The Nordic Centre, Morocco.

Previously, Dr. Peou served as a President of Science for Peace (based at the University of Toronto, Canada); Department Chair of the Department of Politics and Public Administration, Toronto Metropolitan University (Toronto, Canada), and the Department of Political Science, the University of Winnipeg (Manitoba, Canada); Chair of the Advisory and Recruitment Committee for The Manitoba Chair of Global Governance Studies – a joint program between the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba. Prior to his appointment in Winnipeg, he was a Full Professor of International Security at Sophia University (Tokyo, Japan), Canada-ASEAN Fellow, and Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (Singapore). Dr Peou’s research and teaching interests are generally in the fields of Global Peace and Security Studies and Comparative Politics, with specialization in Global Governance, Security and Democracy Studies with a focus on the Indo-Pacific region.

Ambassador Pou Sothirak is a retired academic currently serving as the Distinguished Senior Advisor to the Cambodian Center for Regional Studies (CCRS). He was the Executive Director of the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace from May 2013 to August 2023. He was appointed as Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia from September 2013 to January 2014. He was a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of the Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore from January 2009 to December 2012. He also served as Cambodian Ambassador to Japan from April 2005 to November 2008. He was elected Cambodian Member of Parliaments twice during the national general election in 1993 and 2003. He was appointed as Minister of Industry Mines and Energy of the Royal Government of Cambodia from 1993 to 1998. He has written extensively on various issues concerning the development of Cambodia and the region.
